The Haindl Rune Oracle:
The runes are mystic characters of an "alphabet" whose history stretches back into times
quite different from the present, some 2,200 years ago. Today, the runes have outgrown their original socio-cultural milieu and have become an established part of "world culture." Unlike many esoteric and magical traditions, the runes are not and have never been controlled by centralized authority: there is no priesthood of runecraft. This makes rune studies a very open area. There is a body of generally-accepted authentic lore, and also a considerable body of myth and speculation. These are contained in a number of books and in the systems of rune-using derived from them.
In many parts of the world today, there are practitioners of runic divination, runic
astrology, runic exercises, rune magic, and runic art. This healthy diversity attests to the continuing vitality of the runes, almost two and a half millennia after their
inception.
In a divination, the way in which the runic cards fall can give an experienced rune-user a great deal of information. One's question may only be a beginning: the runes may well reveal information and insights wich the querent did not suspect. Often, the runes can reveal to the inquirer unconscious information which may come as a great surprise. That is their primary function.
